>ahem< No, it's not what you think. It's a poster I made for an online drawing forum that's holding a contest.
http://www.sknightsanctuary.com/pics/af/ffviiposterc.jpg
Be warned. It's big.
Anyway, it took me almost a month to finish, but I'm happy about the results. I colored it entirely on the PC (God bless Photoshop. >hugs it<), so the textures is what took up all that time. I knew I wasn't going to make it look real life, but I was trying to go for stylistically 3-D looking. I hope I actually accomplished that.
So, what'cha guys think?

Cool, the composition is nice and so are the colors. Neat job!

Here, may this one will load:
http://www.sknightsanctuary.com/pics/af/ffviipostercs.jpg
It's smaller than the original, so hopefully it can load better/faster. Not as much detail, but it gives you a better scope of the whole poster...thing. Hope that helps.

http://www.rpgclassics.com/~hideout/sprites/images/valkyrie/valstand.gifWell... Aeris' face seems a bit angular. It looks like a man's to me.
Urkani
05-22-2003, 03:57 PM
Yeah, her bone structure is too dominant, try and make her face seem a bit smoother and her chin a little smaller.
Valkyrie Esker

http://www.rpgclassics.com/~hideout/sprites/images/valkyrie/valstand.gifAnd could you make the eyes a little bit smaller? It's creepy how big they are.
Manus Dei
05-22-2003, 04:04 PM
Yes, her face is a bit creepy. Undead stare.... Oooh. And I think that making the eyes slightly rounder would be an improvement.
SilverKnight
05-22-2003, 05:25 PM
Well, it's a finished product, so I neither can nor will change it. But, it's always nice to know that I drew Aeris like a freakish manly alien thing. Thanks for the heads up. :) And, besides, she was a wimp in the game. If you ask me, she needs a little testosterone in her. :D >winks<
On a futher note, she didn't seem all that manly in the original sketch (http://www.sknightsanctuary.com/pics/af/ffviiposter.jpg). Yes, the eyes are kinda big, and they do sorta clash with the style I colored the picture in, but I was just going loosely by what I'd originally drawn. >juts out her manly chin< So there! :p
Thanks for the comments. I'll make a note to keep her face more rounded in other pics.

I have to agree with Val, Silver, the original sketch is better- I guess the texturing made the faces too angular.
Still, just the very fact that you took the effort of making something like this is praiseworthy. Thank you for sharing it with us!

Why the heck did you drop the original? It was awesome!
Jango
05-22-2003, 08:18 PM
Yeah, no offense but that is awful. Cloud is fine but Aeris looks like a man and Sephiroth looks awful. I doubt that'll win anything in any contest.
SilverKnight
05-22-2003, 08:37 PM
Okay, so the general consensus is that it sucks. So much for being proud of it.
Zombie, here's a tip for you. Not to sound like sour grapes or anything, but learn how to give constructive criticism, please. Fine, you think it looks horrible. Why? Tell me specifically what makes Sephiroth look "awful". (I already see the problems with Aeris.) No point in insinuating that it's a piece of dog shit without a least telling me what I did wrong with it. It's common courtesy, please.
Furthermore, to explain why I "dropped" the sketch, it was because this friendly contest was to design movie posters. Therefore a line sketch wouldn't have worked. I suppose I can see the mistakes now. I drew in anime style, and coloring style didn't compliment it. Thank you for your feedback.
>screams<
Sorry. Needed to get that out of my system.

05-22-2003, 08:59 PM
http://www.rpgclassics.com/~hideout/sprites/images/valkyrie/valstand.gifFor Sephiroth, I think it's because it looks like he has a sunken face, or something. It's like his cheeks start curving inward at some point.

Never colored in this fashion before. Seeing your reaction, I don't think I will again.
Hm. A month's worth of work down the drain. What a waste. >disappears into a black hole<

I happen to find it quite good, and I've narrowed down what your problem is:
It's your lighting against the faces. The ligthing against the faces is angled in such a way that it gives the characters a bit of an angular look.

I don't have a problem with getting criticism. You don't like it, fine. You think it sucks. Fine. All I am asking is to at least tell me WHY, so I can improve upon it later. Constructive criticism I can deal with. Do you know the meaning of the word constructive? Here, let me look it up for you, hm?
con·struc·tive ( P ) Pronunciation Key (kn-strktv)
adj.
1. Serving to improve or advance; helpful: constructive criticism.
2. Of or relating to construction; structural.
3. Law. Based on an interpretation; not directly expressed.
"Serving to improve or advance". Hm. "I'm not the one who's poster sucks shit." Wow, thanks, that serves to help me a great deal. Tell ya what. When you decide to actually reply with an intelligent response (and, trust me, I'm not holding my breath), I'll give you the time of day again. If not, do the internet a favor and shut the fuck up. Have a nice day. :)
And, as a message to everyone else, I apologize for my behavior in previous replies. I was...taken by surprise. But, I do appreciate and take to heart all the critiques posted, and I'll try my hardest to learn from them. Thank you.

I'll have to agree with the others Ori. Whenever you do post critisism, it's on the verge of a lame flame. Now why don't you go and do something better yourself since you're obviously so much better than anyone else of us?
Silver, don't take it to heart. If he can't express why he thinks something sucks, I'd regard it as nothing but jealousy.

Ori, there was simply no need for that:noway: , what so ever!
Anyway SilverKnight that poster is incredibly impressive, I wish I could draw that well!! Like many other have said Aeris does look kinda freaky, but Cloud and Sephiroth look incredible!! Are you planning on doing any other poster for other games, or is this your one and only attempt?

I'm going to say this so even you can understand it:
Yo Ori, I haven't said much on this lately, but I'm going to be frank: Your constant bitching, socially inept attitude have annoyed more than a few people in the past, and all you're doing is being a fucking dumbass right now. once said that I hated hypocritical assholes, and you MORE than qualify. In fact, you're one of the few people who I'm openly contemptuous of, so congrats.
You must think you're big shit with this attitude of yours or something. If that's the kind of recognition you want, so be it, but I'm going to tell you this honestly and truthfully: Everybody hates you. You probably haven't made that many friends in real life, either. I guess your time is booked between RPGs and riding your high horse over here huh? LMAO, claiming you're only bad when others are bad to you, when all you do is defend against attacks which you provoke yourself. So not only are you bad judge of character, but a bad judge of SITUATIONS as well.
The truth is Ori, this post alone is probably the most recognition you'll ever receive, so I advise you to bookmark this page. The only reason you're still here is that you enjoy being an asshole, obviously, you little fuckwit. Look, there's a difference between recognition and respect. Respect you must earn, and it's something you'll probably never have. Now grow up.

Making suggestions for improvements = Constructive criticism
Saying 'this sucks' for no good reason = Jealousy and foolishness
Actually, it's worse than that, it's just being a compelte jerk.
And the original IS GREAT!!!

Well, I feel like an ass for my behavior. >pries foot out of mouth<
Yeah, in retrospect, I probably should've just stuck with the original sketch and colored it in a style that complimented it more. Or, I should've at least toned down the anime features to look more realistic. Anime and realism, never the 'twain shall meet. :D
Ya know, for shits and giggles, I may just recolor this. >twitch< It'll probably take a while, but it'll give me something constructive to do, instead of beating myself up.
And, to answer your question HS, I don't really plan on making any others. While making this one, I made this quick one:
http://www.sknightsanctuary.com/pics/tz/tifatombraider.jpg
The idea of the contest was to make a movie poster for a movie that would never be made. Ah, well. >hands everybody cookies<

The photoshop work is brilliant. Aeris may look a little bit awkward but everyone can still tell who she is, so it's not a big deal :P Very nice. I wish I knew how to do colours like that :P
I can't really say that it looks too 3-D, but the painting-style effect is still nice.
SilverKnight
05-23-2003, 07:15 PM
Cless - Well, maybe 3-D isn't the word I should've used to explain what I wanted. Um, let me think... I wanted it to look...more rounded, I guess? I can't explain it.
Chris-chris - Yeah, I suppose her bangs are a little weird, but I was going entirely on memory, and I'd never seen what Tifa would look like with her hair up.
Valkyrie Esker - Aww, I love you, too. >hug< :D

Well, I really liked the effects used for the black and white materia, and the buster sword. It looked pretty good, like it had seen plenty of battles. On the other hand I think that the faces on a whole look "dirty", I think that you could make them look better by softening the shadows or by not making them quite as dark. You have a lot of talent with PS.

Hey Silver, correct me if I'm mistaken, but you said that the FF7 Poster was your first attempt, right? Guess what, most first attempts don't work, that's why people keep trying until they get them right. In fact, that poster was NOT the worst I've seen, trust me. So, from the point of view of experience, it was NOT a waste of time. And your Tifa one was great! You're improving already. Keep working on them, and showing them to us, we'll keep giving you fair criticism, and, when earned, praise as well. (As for flames, ignore them, they're meaningless, and the Mods will take care of them.)
Keep up the good work.

Keep up the good work. Hm, I might not have worded myself correctly. What I meant was that the FFVII poster was my first attempt to color in that particular style--meaning, the lines not showing. Well, no, that's a lie. It's my second attempt to draw without the lines, and the first...came out a bit better. But then, the art wasn't as stylized, so I had more realistic proportions to work with. The style I used with Tifa is more simplistic than what I usually go for, so, in all honesty, it was easy. The hardest part about getting her right was to remove the scratchiness from some of the lines. Thanks for the encouragement.
And, yeah, I saw that their skin tones looked...off somehow, but I wasn't exactly sure. Cloud's is probably the worst. Next time, I should be a lot more sparse when using black to shade.
Oh, and one thing. I drew black materia in there? Where? I wanna see, I wanna see! :D
Frameskip
05-24-2003, 12:38 AM
Heh, I kinda took Meteor as te black materia, I always kinda envisioned it as looking like that when active.
Just as a suggestion, to make their shaded skin tones look a bit better, drop only the brightness value and it should help, but you may have done that and the blend made it look different.

Silverknight, the works you have displayed thus far are simply astounding. I think each one is great. Although I might agree that Aeris's face is a bit angular, that is not something that cannot be improved upon in later works. I am looking forward to seeing what else you display.
